How to make Trap Soul/R&B chord progressions?
RnB uses what we often call ‘jazz chords’ (7ths, 9ths, etc), which are usually not found in basic trap or pop music. What it comes down to is understanding how these are used to add flavor and character to the progression.
Examples of popular songs that incorporate these chord progressions are Drake or Bryson Tiller’s songs.
Soul/jazz chords are about a tasteful amount of dissonance and tension. In a nutshell, start with a triad (1-3-5), take out the 1 (play that note with your 808) then add the 7th and 9th, and 13th as desired to create that dissonance or tension.
Removing the C from the root note and playing it with 808 or bass frees up sonic space (and one of your fingers if you’re a player).
So if your 808 note is C, that’s the 1. If you’re using a major scale, then 3 is E, 5 is G, 7 is B, 9 is D, and 13 is A.
So you could play GBDE to go along with that bass note C, for example, that’s a 3-5-7-9 chord (the 3 (E) is inverted and sitting on top of the chord). Or for even more dissonance, you could play GABD which would be a 5-7-9-13 chord where the 13 (A) is transposed down an octave.
Learn your notes and scales, count the intervals, and eventually, you’ll start to train your ear.
