About the Song –
The chord sequence is unresolved: IV – III – vi – III (very similar vibes to Thank U, Next), and it never really ‘lands’ anywhere so it’s like a stone that just keeps on rolling without ever giving us a satisfying ending.
The structure builds leads us to want a kind of ‘explosion’ when we reach the chorus but that never arrives. The chord sequence continues its revolving pattern, we don’t get much in the way of pay-off except the rap section.
The instrumentation and mix is kind of ASMR in the way that it tickles the ear. Lots of high frequencies, crinkles, taps, and hisses.
It’s basically entirely designed to make you want more – to hit that repeat button to try to find satisfaction for your craving. I’ve noticed this production technique a lot lately. For example, Old Town Road is under 2 mins, compared to the usual radio edit length of about 3:30. So when you reach the end you don’t quite feel like the song scratched the itch so you hit repeat. Hence it’s insane popularity.
McDonald’s doesn’t fill you up, the drugs don’t work and this song is like a striptease where the lights go out before you see what you came for.
What also makes “Streets” by Doja Cat so addicting is there is just a seemingly huge chasm of space between the bass and everything, the vocals are so breathy and almost claustrophobic. Overall it’s just intoxicating in that way. There’s plenty of music that attempts to capture this feel though, this is just particularly effective.
